Work Package 3 – Sustainable Packaging Innovation for Mediterranean Meals
Modernized Mediterranean meals require innovative packaging that preserves quality, extends shelf-life, and reduces environmental impact. WP3 addresses this need by developing eco-friendly, bio-based, and active packaging solutions tailored to MEDIET4ALL food products.
Objectives of WP3
WP3 aims to:
Design sustainable packaging using bio-based and recyclable materials, including marine co-products.
Develop active coatings with natural antimicrobial and antioxidant extracts.
Ensure industrial feasibility and scalability while preserving the quality and safety of Mediterranean meals.
Approach
Led by Université Bourgogne Europe, WP3 brings together experts in food packaging, chemistry, microbiology, and material science across several European partners. Key activities include:
Selection of suitable bio-based packaging materials.
Development of industrial-compatible coating strategies.
Testing natural extracts for antimicrobial and antioxidant performance.
Application of prototypes on real food products under controlled conditions.
This approach ensures packaging solutions are functional, safe, and environmentally responsible.
Key achievements
At mid-project stage, WP3 has delivered:
Selection and testing of multiple bio-based materials and coatings.
Production of prototype films applied on real food products.
Validation of marine co-products and low-energy technologies for industrial application.
Initial demonstration of promising shelf-life extension and functional performance.
Impact and next steps
WP3 contributes to sustainable food systems by replacing conventional plastics with bio-based alternatives while maintaining food quality. Next steps include:
Producing larger prototype batches.
Transitioning from model foods to real MedMeals.
Testing antibacterial and antioxidant performance under storage conditions.
Evaluating final prototypes for safety and shelf-life.
